Frequently asked questions
We collect your used electronics, repurpose what we can, and recycle the rest.
What makes Handoff unique?
First, we come to your door at a cost that's 50% less than the leading competitor.
Second, we work in bulk connecting us to charities that are incentivized to repurpose what they receive and mandated, by law, to recycle responsibly.
Third, we offer a way for you to give back to your local community by donating a portion of what is collected from tax deductions.
What happens behind the scenes?
We add your items to your neighbor's contributions.
Once we collect enough items to fill a palette (44 cu ft) we gift these items to one of our charity partners who identify which items (or materials) will be repurposed.
Often, repurposed items and materials end up in school labs or community technology centers.
How can I feel secure my stuff is being handled properly?
Items and materials that can be repurposed are handled in accordance with the Department of Defense (DOD) 5220.22-M standard.
In the event data needs to be erased, our partners follow Gutmann's data destruction methodology.
The remaining materials are processed utilizing 'zero landfill' principles where items are de-assembled to their component level (circuit board, glass, metal, plastic) for recycling and re-use.
What types of devices are most likely to be repurposed?
Generally speaking, items that have high potential for reuse will be no more than 6 years old, in working condition, and internet capable. Working laptops, tablets, desktops, +17" monitors, mice, keyboards, external hard drives and cables are in highest demand.
How do I prepare my devices?
For larger items such as TVs or monitors we ask that you disconnect all cables. Place all your wires, cables, and smaller items in a cardboard box roughly the size of a banker's box. If you have the original power cable, include it.
This will help our partners when assessing repurposing your items. Regarding data, we don't attempt retrieval (yet) and encourage you to transfer any and all sensitive data from your devices before we pick them up. Note: We are not responsible for any lost data once we receive the item.
